This registered private, non-profit association was founded in 2000 (VA 1888 – 2003, ZVR Number: 085816730.

Aims of the Association

  1. Research and education, scientific publications in ophthalmology
  2. Eye surgeries for free outside Austria
  3. Presentation of scientific papers, lectures, courses, informations, meetings and scientific discussions
  4. Purchase of materials and supplies to perform scientific research, to prepare scientific publications and reports and to realize teaching and learning in the specific field.

How it started

In 1996 I – Christoph Faschinger – saw a full-page advertisement: you could be doing surgery in Papua New Guinea or China or Romania or Zambia or the Solomon Islands or Nigeria or... The letters became smaller and smaller like in a chart to check the visual acuity. On top there was a picture of a squinting Polynesian with lot of feathers in his hear, who was examined by a doctor doing ophthalmoscopy.
The client of this advertisement was S.E.E. International (Surgical eye Expeditions), a Californian non-profit organisation (www.seeintl.org).
I asked Martin Eckhardt, my friend and collegue, if he would like to accompany me to an eye camp. He agreed cheerfully.
So we both became members of S.E.E. and asked for a possible participation in an eye camp in Papua New Guinea. This organisation has contact to doctors from developing countries and they manage the dates and locations for the ongoing eye camps.
Further factors who motivated me to act in this way were fulfilling a dream of my youth to once become a ”bushdoctor”, love of adventures and the daily living of Christian charity I experience during my time as a resident in the Catholic Student´s Hostel (Head: Dr. E. Kapellari, Graz).
